about

A lifelong friend passed away; suicide.

We always played piano together growing up—well, not “together,” but competitively, kicking each other off the bench as soon as possible—and so the song is made from layers of prepared piano. I put pieces of rubber, paperclips, and all kinds of junk on my piano strings and recorded them with a 4 track tape player.

The lyrics are snippets of conversations I remember from those tortured years of middle school and high school, college; in those fragile years when you struggle with pretty much everything, and we both struggled with mental health. The worse things got for her, she would always slip back behind the veil again.

THEORY OF SURVIVAL

“I have sunk many ships
The more I do it, the easier it gets

It’s such a thrill to watch it blow
I can’t be here but I stole the show”

“But I know you will always figure it out
Some days it’s very bad, but they pass”

Watch how we wither, how we wither away
This is where our enemies used to play

“I’m a maker, I shift my shape
Who has the keys where we hide away”

Only one way in, and one way out
Some days it’s very bad, but they pass

And I won’t be just passing time
Always fires are burning and eyes are open wide

Watch how we wither, how we wither away
This is where our enemies choose to play

But if I stay, would it be okay?

"A prepossessing voice" (A&R Factory).

No one sounds quite like Kela Parker. The Los Angeles- based, Portland, Oregon-bred singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist pushes the edges of pop forms with her singular mystic prairie rock, “like folk music, but from a country you’ve never heard of before.” (Destination: Universe!). ... more
